Business English: False friends

RRHH Digital. The following words are often confused when translating from English to Spanish and are called False Friends.

1. to advise (reg verb)= aconsejar

The doctor advisedme to rest in bed for a few days, so I’m going to work from home.

2. Agenda (noun) = Programa del Dia
The boss was glad his secretary organized his agenda, as he was incredibly busy.

3. to intend (reg verb) = previsto

We intended to reach Barcelona by noon.

4. arena(noun) = estadio
The arena was filled to its capacity. We all got corporate tickets as part of our company bonus.

5. argument (noun) = discusión
She was crying after having an argument with her colleagues.

6. card (noun) = tarjeta
Would you like to pay with your card or in cash?

7. attempt(noun) = intento
The lawyer passed her exam on the third attempt
