The Hobbit

The Hobbit was written by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, a professor at Oxford University. It was published on 21 September 1937 and since then it is thought that over 100 million copies have been sold.

The novel follows the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit of the title. Hobbits are a fictional race of little people invented by Tolkien. In the story, Bilbo Baggins accompanies a band of dwarves on a treasure hunt. During their expedition they meet many mythical creatures and to obtain the treasure they have to slay a dragon.

The Hobbit is the prequel to J.R.R. Tolkien’s later work The Lord of the Rings, which was made into a series of films by the New Zealand film director Peter Jackson. The same director made a film version of The Hobbit, released as a trilogy between 2012 and 2014.
